What to Send for a Quote

The quality of a grinding quote depends on the quality of the information we receive. Complete, clear project information allows us to provide accurate pricing, realistic timelines, and appropriate technical recommendations.

Required Information

Technical Drawings or Specifications

Preferred formats: PDF, DWG, DXF

Must include:

  • All dimensions relevant to grinding operations
  • Specified tolerances (not “standard” — be explicit)
  • Surface finish requirements (Ra value preferred)
  • Material specification (grade and condition)
  • GD&T callouts when applicable

If no drawings exist: provide photographs of the component plus key dimensions. We can also help develop drawings through our reverse engineering services.

Material Specification

  • Material grade (e.g., ASTM A105, 316 stainless, 4140)
  • Heat treatment condition (annealed, normalized, Q&T, hardened)
  • Hardness (if known — Rockwell or Brinell)
  • Special material requirements (NACE, cryogenic, etc.)

Quantity

  • Number of pieces for this order
  • Potential repeat orders (affects setup amortization and pricing)
  • Is this a prototype or production component?

Timeline

  • When do you need the finished components?
  • Is this a rush request?
  • Any specific delivery constraints?

Service Required

  • Which grinding operations are needed? (surface, vertical, ID, OD, etc.)
  • New component manufacturing or repair/rework?
  • Any secondary operations needed? (machining, drilling, tapping)
finished cylinders

Helpful Additional Information

Application Description

Understanding what the component does helps us identify truly critical dimensions, suggest appropriate tolerances, and flag potential issues. Example: “Gate valve body for 600# ANSI service, carbon steel, for refinery service.”

Operating Conditions

  • Pressure and temperature range
  • Fluid or process media
  • Environmental conditions
  • Service history (for repair work)

Previous Grinding Issues

If you’ve had problems with this component at another grinding shop, share what happened. This helps us avoid repeating mistakes and propose better solutions.
